18 Month Portraits

Left unfinished by Amy :) @ 2:08 pm

Last week we took Jack to JC Penney to have some pictures taken. I chose them for several reasons: 1) We had some bad and stupid experiences at Picture People, and have vowed never to go there again; 2) We have a JC Penney credit card with an insane limit; and 3) They have Sesame Street backgrounds and props! Well the portraits turned out so well and the photographers we had were so good that we ended up buying their portrait club membership, which is good for the next 2 years, and we ordered a bunch of prints. Today I got notice that they’re up online so you can go see them if you want to! Just follow this link and where it asks for Customer Name put in Amy Peel. There are some edited images that the photographer did for us, and all the proofs too. We ordered E1, E4, E7, E14, P13 and P19. P13 and P19 captured Jack’s personality so well, and after mulling it over we may go back and order P18 as well. We didn’t get it originally because you can’t really see his face, but it’s so so cute!

I Didn’t Think This One Through

Plunger Boy

Yes, that’s Jack, carrying around a plunger.

Plungers are an item that doesn’t get moved with you. You just leave them at the old house or throw them away, then buy a new one at the new place. So when Jack and I went out to run errands yesterday, we picked one up. I put it in the cart and he immediately started grabbing for it, so rather than hear him scream about not getting it I gave it to him to hold. Which he did, the whole time we were in Target. And the cashier had to scan it with the gun because he wouldn’t put it on the belt. And then he held onto it the whole way home in the car.

This really wouldn’t be a problem if it were just about any other item in the world. But once this plunger gets used, Jack isn’t going to be able to play with it any more, and he’s not going to understand why. I really should think about things like this more carefully.

P.S. The Dollar Spot at Target totally kicked my ass yesterday! They have all sorts of cute Halloween stuff AND scrapbooking things! Very dangerous for my debit card.

The Itch

Left unfinished by Amy :) @ 11:40 pm

I’ve had it before, so I know what it feels like. It’s only still in the beginning stages, but it’s there. I’m powerless to stop it, but nothing can be done right now to satisfy it.

Mama’s got the Baby Fever.

When I was growing up and thought about my future, I always wanted to have 5 kids for some reason. Now that I have one, that number has changed a bit. We both (that would be Johnny and I; I’m sure Jack could do without anyone else forcing him to share the spotlight) want at least one more, and after that we’ll see who wins on the final number. And even though the timing isn’t right at this point, I’m starting to fondly remember being pregnant and wishing that I was again. Despite having pretty severe gestational diabetes, I had a rather easy pregnancy. I was reeeeeeally tired for most of it, and vaguely nauseous for a good chunk, but I didn’t gain a whole lot of weight and I never really reached that “ok, I’m so over this being pregnant thing” stage. I still catch myself rubbing my belly at times; I did that almost constantly during my third trimester. I remember the feeling I got when I felt Jack moving inside me, a joyous, fluttery excitement, similar to what you felt as a child on Christmas Eve when you were trying to fall asleep, only multiplied by 1,000. I remember those first days and weeks, when he was so small and soft and seemingly fragile, and I wanted to have him snuggled next to me all the time. I don’t remember the sleepless nights, and the times I wanted to pull my hair out because I just couldn’t take the crying anymore, and the post-partum depression. I certainly don’t remember the emergency surgery. Those memories are tucked safely away in the back of my brain: still there, but dusty and covered with cobwebs. This, I think, is exactly how the human race has survived all these years.

So for now, I’ll think fondly back and remember the better parts. For now, I’ll continue to be satisfied seeing this every day.
