Look What I Found!

September 30th, 2004 by Woody!

The moving process is very enlightening. You find things you didn’t even know you had. You find things you only find when moving, then promise to give it it’s proper place when you get to the new place. Two years later, you find it when packing up and going to the next place. Eventually, the cycle must come to an end and that time is now. Instead of just chucking it forever, I decided I would scan items or take pictures of them before tossing them into oblivion. So, I’m getting the moving process done and filling space on the blog. It’s a win/win situation. Except for you the reader.

The first Look What I Found segment will be Saturday and will keep popping up sporadically until I weed out all the remnants of my past that need to get buried.

What else is going on?

The guys at Red vs. Blue are promising big changes in store for next week. Most importantly, they have begun work on the Season 3 opener. Check out their new master site, Rooster Teeth Dot Com.

Week-Late Comic Reviews

September 29th, 2004 by Woody!

Should be the last edition of this feature since I actually got this week’s comics today. Although, most of them aren’t knocking my socks off. Also, my computer is mostly set up and feeling much more comfortable with it ready to go whenever I want.

H-E-R-O #20: I really miss the previous approach to the series. Somebody would find the H-E-R-O devide that would turn them into a super-hero, we see how different people would react to that, then the device would move on to another person. Not the case anymore. Here, we’ve seen the device fall into the wrong hands, and previous device holders are gathering to stop him. Not a bad storyline, just seems to be dragging on. Unfortunately, I think this series is coming to an end soon. I was really looking forward to more of the book’s original stuff. I especially loved seeing what happened when the device fell into the hands of a caveman. I don’t know if HERO has been cancelled of Pfeifer, the writer, is suddenly too popular and in demand to continue with this series.

Army of Darkness #2: This series still isn’t a home-run, but this issue is an improvement over the first. It’s less a rehash of the Evil Dead movies than #1 was, had some decent original lines. Still not thrilled with this artist. He’s okay, but I don’t think his style fits this book. Your average joe will be thoroughly confused but it’s a nice little off-shoot from the Army of Darkness movie.

Don’t have time for anymore right now. Maybe another day.

“Yes, I rather like this God fellow. He’s very theatrical, you know, a pestilence here, a plague there. Omnipotence. Gotta get me some of that.”

Potency Pill For NFL Runningbacks

September 28th, 2004 by Woody!

Are you struggling to get to the line of scrimmage? Unble to get up your yards per carry any more? Then I have the solution for you: the Bengals Defense. Just take one serving of this little orange pill and you’ll feel like yourself in no time. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s customer testimonials.

Curtis from New York City: “The last couple years, I’ve struggled at the beginning of seasons. I wasn’t able to get my groove on until late October, early November. But thanks to the Bengals Defense, I ran for almost two hundred yards and pounded it in to score twice. Thanks, BD!”

Jamal from Baltimore: “So far this year, I wasn’t getting the job done. You know, between the tackles. I only had 57 yards in my first two games. But once I saw that Bengals Defense, I knew I could get it on again. I gained about 175 yards from just four touches! And I didn’t even need a prescription!”

Lee from Cleveland: “I was doing nothing last year. I just sat on the sidelines, limp and flacid. But once I got me some of that Bengals Defense, I was alive and vibrant again… just like when I was in college!”

These results could be yours. Just put Bengals Defense on your schedule and the little orange pill will do the rest. With no run-stoppers on our roster, there’s no negative side-effects. No blackouts! No rectal bleeding! No blackouts! Just Pro Bowl-like numbers and lots of Sportscenter highlights. Order now!

“Doctor! Doctor! Can’t you see I’m burnin’? Burnin’!”

Too Busy To Post Anything Original

September 27th, 2004 by Woody!

I am moved, but not moved in. Still lots to set up and get organized this week.
My computer is not assembled yet, so I’m on Kelley’s. Of course, we had to spend the last 24 hours debugging it and removing all the spyware and whatnot that has recently infested it. This computer has not made the transition well from dial-up to “always on” internet. So, I’ll try to get my computer up and going so I don’t have to kick her off her computer to keep up my posting streak.

And now, some strange odd snippets:
Last Starfighter: The Musical?

Better quality pics of the Fantastic Four cast. After initial upsetness of the Thing costume, I think it might work out.

“Teriffic. I’m about to get killed a million miles from nowhere with a gung-ho iguana who tells me to relax.”

Moving Day

September 26th, 2004 by Woody!

As I have said before, I try not to talk about my own life on here too much. Mostly, cause it takes me so long to actually recap events that they’re not too timely. That, and it’s usually pretty boring. More boring than most of the stuff I put on here, that is. But this is one thing that is too big to ignore: I’m moving. For the fifth time since college, I am packing up my worldly possessions and relocating them, and myself, to a new residence. I’ll be down in the Cincinnati area, but on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. In some regards, it will be returning to a place I spent seven years of my life. On the other hand, it’s the other side of town, one I’m not too familiar with. I’ll be right down the road where John Conner liberated lobsters in a drunken stupor recently.

My girlfriend Kelley already moved into the house last month and has been exhaustively working on the place to get it up to her standards. Here’s a look at the new place. There’s a nice before and after look to the gallery. The first pictures are the house under previous management and the latter ones show just a fraction of the great work Kelley has done in the last month.

Lots of good things down there. A couple ESPN radio affiliates that will hopefully keep me from having to buy satelite radio. I’m crossing my fingers those places put out a decent signal. I’ve already found a good comic shop, so I will be making regular runs during the week and won’t have to ask Kelley to get them for me anymore.

Speaking of comics, I think I have to come up with a new way to store my comics. Over at Reading Along, they mention plastic boxes. Anyone try those?

Once again, I was talking about my real life, then drifted into comics talk. It’s a new chapter full of new challenges that I’m looking forward to.

“This game is stupid! You spend an hour hanging wind chimes and then you fight? What kind of game is that?”

Quote Standings Pennant Race

September 25th, 2004 by Woody!

As baseball teams battle for first place in their respective playoff battles, a couple of players have been battling it out in our quote contest. For the first time since the inception of this blog, someone was in first place that was not Johnny. Also plenty of other action as there was movement throughout the quote standings.

Jeff got a fat one over the plate and spotted a Late Night Top Ten list to move up to a dozen points. MOe was the cock of the walk as he tied Johnny with an LXG Sean Connery line and one of Kenny Mayne’s catch phrases. Amy got to 20 with an exchange from Celebrity Jeopardy. MOe pulled into first with a quote from another guy I like to do impressions of. dupree tied Kerry by spotting a futuristic falacy. Amy became legal by knowing G.I. Joe knew that knowing was half the batlle. Kelley and Erin both got credit for a literary miscue I made. Kerry pulled away from dupree by seeing Bill & Ted’s sage advice. Johnny pulled back into a first place tie when the comic shop guy was talkin’ Klingon on Talk Like A Pirate Day. MOe hopped back in the lead the very next day, though, with a little MST3K. Johnny pulled back even, Firefly style.

Quote Standings
MOe 25
Johnny 25
Amy 21
Kelley 16
Jeff 12
Kerry 8
dupree 7
Erin 2
Zandra 1
Rinnert 1

Remember, anyone can guess a quote by just typing your answer in the comment section. Any quote is available until someone correctly identifies it. If your name is not on the above list, you are in last place!

Fan Film Friday: Green Arrow

September 24th, 2004 by Woody!

Lets face it, the idea of a modern day Robin Hood running around city rooftops fighting crime dressed all in green sounds like a silly concept. It’s one that has had a successful run in comic books, but bringing it into the real world seems problematic.

FF type: Trailer
I definitely think this benefited from being a trailer. Only having to use small portions with the main character keeps it semi-realistic feeling and amps up the mystery for those unfamiliar with our hero. I don’t know how a full movie will a fleshed-out look at Green Arrow would pan out.

Production Quality: (4.5) Very good. It doesn’t look like a big budget production, but still is very sharp. There’s some good locations and a few different ways to show off GA’s archery skills and the action in this piece.

Performances: (3.5) I really liked the bad guy who did the talking. He’s got a really cool voice, and plays a good bad guy. I wasn’t so much thrilled with the female lead. This reporter barely looks like she can get a job in Hopkinsville, Ketnucky or Mansfield, Ohio, let alone “Star City.” Other than her expository stand-up, her only job is to look pretty while being kidnapped in a parking garage so it’s hard to gauge her on anything else. You really don’t see too much of anyone, even Green Arrow himself. It’s hard to grade actors or extras on how they look in shadows or getting impaled by arrows. (Arrowed!) Basically, I started at a 3, added a point for the bad guy’s performance and took half of one away for the reporter lady.

Fan quotient: (5) This character has a rich history and has gone through many progressions with different supporting casts. But you don’t need to know any of that to enjoy this clip. For those of you who have followed him, this GA is very close to the Mike Grell version, a good choice for an action movie.

FF obtainment: (5) You can see it at IFilm and on the official website.

Green Arrow: 18 out of 20.

The official website says they are currently raising money to shoot another, completely new 15 minute film based on the Emerald Archer. I’d be interested if they could pull off a good movie which would feature the main character more.

If you want more, check out Green Arrow’s blog. Or, more accurately, his “journal of crime fighting and goatee maintenance.”

Oh, Crap.

September 23rd, 2004 by Woody!

I missed the Smallville season premiere last night. As one man put it, “I only really watch the season openers and closers of this show as those are the only episodes where anything happens.” So, I missed out on half the progress that will be made this season. Anyone have an idea if it’ll be rerun anytime soon? Maybe that Big Sunday thingie the WB runs?

I better talk football now cause I’ll be too busy to do it Sunday. The next three weeks, the Cincinnati Bengals play their divisional rivals, and the timing really couldn’t be better. The Ravens, Browns, and Steelers are all facing some major injuries that may help us put up some Ws.

Before I miss out on picking my Week 3 games, here we go.

Falcons over Cardinals
Ravens over Bengals
Vikes over Bears
Giants over Browns
Texans over Chiefs
Titans over Jags
Rams over Saints
Eagles over Lions
Dolphins over Steelers
Broncos over Chargers
Colts over Packers
Seahawks over 49ers
Raiders over Bucs
Cowboys over Redskins

Small week. We’ve already got bye weeks. That didn’t take long.

I was only 8-8 this last weekend with all the upsets. That makes me 19-13 for the season, so far.

A rare NBA note from me: Michael Jordan wants to unretire… again. And, apparently, wants to play for the Heat with Shaq. Most humorous part of the story, other than Jordan retiring a fourth time, Shaq won’t return his phone calls.

And, best news today, new episodes of Red vs. Blue are promised for the end of the month.

“Which of your obsessive-compulsive fixations is behind today’s summons?”

Week-Late Comic Reviews

September 22nd, 2004 by Woody!

Week-Late Comic Reviews will not be a regular feature because I will soon have regular, timely access to a decent comic shop for the first time in many years. Yeah, it stinks living in an area with no decent shops within an hour’s driving distance. In fact, I wouldn’t have even had access to last week’s comics yet if it weren’t for the best girlfriend ever. Not only did she pick up my comics for me, but mailed them to me. I think that’s the definition of “keeper.” Thank you, Kelley.

Madrox #1: Welcome back, Peter David. In the mutant boom of the early 1990s, he was tossed a bunch of reject cast-offs but made X-factor the best X book of them all. Maybe ever. Here, one of those team members gets his own spotlight. Maybe I shouldn’t say “one of those team members,” cause we’re talking about Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man. This is a guy who can be two places in once. While you have to choose when you reach a fork in the road, he can follow both paths. PAD always had an interesting take on those possibilities during his X-factor days and that’s even more the case now. There’s also two of his ex-teamates along to help him solve a very personal murder: his own. Here, read it for yourself.

Wanted #5: I’m not ashamed to admit I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Maybe I should call it a guilty pleasure but it’s been a hell of a ride that I can’t get anywhere else. I’ve really enjoyed the silver age creations that have been taken to their extreme possibilities. It was bad enough when the bad guys won, now they’re showing off. Definitely a lot of fun for those who enjoy their entertainment demented.

Ultimate Nightmare #2: One of the benefits of the Week-Late Comic Reviews is seeing other people’s reaction to a comic before actually seeing the comic, itself. I knew what their beef was and prepared to face it. With proper expectations, definitely enjoyed it. I can see why people were bothered considering the entire issue took place in transit from one location to another. I also wouldn’t be too bothered because it makes more sense to have these discussions before arriving, as opposed to on location while investigating the disturbance as would have happened in an earlier comic time.

I would do more, but I had to do way too much work at work today to put up more than this. Also, these reviews are rather pointless without a score or rating system.

“Your scientists have yet to discover how neural networks create self-consciousness, let alone how the human brain processes two-dimensional retinal images into the three-dimensional phenomenon known as perception. Yet you somehow brazenly declare seeing is believing?”

Movie Previews

September 21st, 2004 by Woody!

The previews for Sin City went up last week, then down. Then up, then down. Now they might be up again. Here’s the preview shown at this summer’s big San Diego Comic-Con.

Speaking of trailers, Firefly’s trailer is due out in January. Filming is done. There will even be a Serenity novel. Creator Joss Whedon’s mum on X3, which could be his next prject. Before Brian Singer left, I guess Sigourney Weaver was to be in X3. Good casting, I could really see her pulling off Emma Frost, the White Queen.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the second issue of the Army of Darkness comic book. The first issue didn’t really knock my socks off. The best stuff seemed to be rehashes of what was in Evil Dead 2, and the art is way too cartoony for my tastes. But it’s an Army of Darkness comic so it would have to suck really bad for me not to support it.

Lightning round:
The Fantastic Four in USA Today. Again, despite her hotness, still not thrilled with Alba as Sue Storm. Still like Chiklis as the Thing, just hope this isn’t the final product. Here’s a more promising look.

From the creators of Scary Movie comes Superhero!

Here’s the lowdown on the Avengers Finale.

Here’s five reasons to get Marvel Team-Up from the writer, himself.

Jennifer Connelley’s on board for Hulk 2.

Wow, here’s a take on Green Lantern that some folks won’t like.

Here’s an article about Superheroes on Television.

Are you watching the Venture Brothers yet? Shame on you. Cartoon Network, 11 p.m. on Saturdays and the episode gets rerun Sunday nights at 12:30.

“We’re not gonna die. You know why? Because we are so… very… pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die.”
