I Am Iron Man

Check it out. Look at that picture. Pretty badass. And that’s the way that the Armored Avenger comes across in his first major motion picture this past weekend. Don’t don’t take just my word for it: Iron Man is the best-reviewed movie of the year so far. I doubt people thought it was Citizen Kane, but Iron Man has a 94% approval rate. Even the Goat gave it a B+. And audiences seem to have taken to it, as well. Lots of people went to see it: over $100 million in the opening weekend suggests that. So, what did I think of it? Glad you asked.

I’ve got to say this is an elite comic book movie and a good overall movie in general with fantastic performances and impressive special effects. The story’s great, which is no surprise considering they consulted top Marvel writers before filming. As far as superhero movies go, this belongs up near the top of the list and just might be the most entertaining. The entire cast kicked ass, Favreau’s directing was tight and focussed, and the movie did a fine job of getting dark when it had to but maintaining a goodd amount of humor. Yes, everyone who has seen the movie is right: Robert Downey, Jr. owned Tony Stark. Let there be no doubt. It didn’t take too long for every guy in that theater to want to be Tony Stark. Except for the being held prisoner thing.

And the fun didn’t end with the credits. Hopefully, you stayed until the end. Otherwise, you missed out on quite a revelation. It certainly bodes well for the future of movie Iron Man and other Marvel characters, too. Obviously, with this much good feeling surrounding the blockbuster hit, people are already talking sequels. There’s plenty more Iron Man goodness to farm for follow-ups. There’s lots of material in the last 40 years of Iron Man comics. And Marvel has announced they’re getting ready to make even more movies starring Avengers. And maybe even an Avengers movie, too? Hmmm…

Now, the big question is, should I try out the Iron Man video game?

“Oh, Hagar the Horrible, if you keep up that lifestyle of pillaging and turkey legs, you’ll be dead within a month.”

Couldn’t agree more. They did everything right with this movie and I went with someone who knows nothing about comics and they loved it to. Great performances, direction, and effects and I thought just the right amount of action. Now we just need to find a way to actually wait for sequels.

Side note; this was the first of what is going to be a great movie summer and boy did it set the bar high.

the announcement also gave us info on:
    June 4 2010 Thor
    May6 2011 Capt. America
    July 2011 The Avengers
it is a little disappointing that there is no marvel movie next year but i like the fact that they finally acknowledged that there are more superheroes out there and not just villians. at this point in time i would rather see an avengers movie that a justice league movie. keep the batman movies coming, but after the last superman movie that needs to be laid to rest.

I thought Wolverine was coming out next year. Yeah, it’s not a straight-up “Marvel Movie” but I’m looking forward to that nonetheless. Having Ryan Reynolds on board as Deadpool certainly helps!

I really liked this flick. I can watch a crap movie with great effects and be happy. When it has a good plot and excellent acting, it’s a double bonus. One thing that bothered me is, how much time did Stark get to work in that first suit? He and his fellow prisoner said that he’d probably have a week before they’d kill him, but then it was revealed that he was captive for three months. I’m just knit-picking, I guess.

I got the sense that an Avengers movie would be out next. I’m not sure about Samuel L as Col. Fury though. Yes, he plays a good bad-ass, but a different kind of bad-ass. Know what I mean? Personally, I am thrilled about all these Marvel movies. I hope Stan Lee is getting is dues. It was great that he played (or was confused as) Hef.
