Jedi Robes And Gucci Shoes Are The Same

June 30th, 2008 by Woody!

This item is a bit old but I heard a few people talk about this and I wanted to bring some attention to it. Also, I don’t get enough excuses on this site to post pictures of Kristin Davis. Back when that chick movie came out a few weeks ago, Sex In The City fans acted just like Star Wars fans. They waited in line dressed as their favorite characters, tossed back the drinks made famous on the show, and made a big production of this event. I guess emulating three hookers and their mom is not as cringe worthy as recreating light saber battles.

I sounded off before about a similar double standard where one fan base’s behavior was accepted even though it was identical to what the geeks did. For some reason, no one batted an eye when people dressed up as pirates to go see Pirates of the Caribbean. But getting all done up as Darth Maul? Unacceptable, even though guys wear less eyeliner as the latter.

This also reminded me of the debate between Sports Guy vs. Star Wars nerd since even though they are equal, society has determined sports obsession is acceptable. Any kind of interest in sci fi and comics are not.

The point is we all have geek tendencies inside of us. Choose wisely what you nerd out about unless you want society giving you a hard time.

“So it’s a show about three hookers and their mom?”

Secret Origins: The Sock Drawer

June 29th, 2008 by Woody!

I’m sure I mentioned how I came up with the name for this here blog. But I don’t think I ever showed you. Here it is:
Sock Drawer Origin Quantum Woody
Yep, that’s it in the corner there. When there used to be a tagline in my headline, it was that: “Wait… there’s actually a drawer… just for socks?” Yeah, this series was full of great stuff. If you’re going to name your blog after a reference, get one from Quantum & Woody. Although, if you are starting now, you should probably use something that hasn’t been canceled for about a decade. Besides, don’t copy my idea.

“Is there anyone here who speaks English? Or maybe even ancient Greek?”

Astonishing X-Men Now More Astonishing

June 28th, 2008 by Woody!

Joss Whedon wrapped up his run on Astonishing X-Men a couple weeks ago and this is a fitting way to go back and take a new look at #1. This is a neat dramatization of a comic book that I’m surprised isn’t done more often. Thanks to Gagglefrak for pointing this out.

You can send me a YouTube link or some other embeddable video provider and if I like it (or need it) enough to put it up here, Sock Point to you.

Feel free to send your suggestions to my gmail account. It’s woodmania. I’d type it out but I don’t need more junk mail. Just your YouTube suggestions.

Friday Night Fights: Where’s The Killer Instinct, Buffalo Wing?

Nightwing Last Laugh Joker
I seem to remember the Last Laugh event in pretty good terms. The Joker probably does not. Bahlactus has spoken.

“I like him already.”

I Am So Getting This

June 26th, 2008 by Woody!

You don’t have to look too far to find amusing and cool t-shirts on the internet. Lots of companies have created interesting wears for the web public. There’s even a local T-Shirt company that seems to do pretty well. Lots of good stuff out there that amuses me but never moves me to plop down more than $10 to wear in public. But this… this is different. This moves me. I’m going to not only buy this for me but probably everyone I’m buying Christmas presents for. They may not know it, but they totally want it. Everyone should.

The first person who gets what this T-shirt is referencing gets today’s Sock Point.

Navigator My Ass

June 25th, 2008 by Woody!

I’ve been a little cranky lately and once again the blame goes to the stupid cable company. Time Warner unveiled their new Cable Navigator. And by “unveil” I mean they dumped it on us in the middle of the night. They’re passing it off as an “upgrade” while it actually takes more steps to do simple processes, it is more difficult to store and track my DVR content, and the damn thing isn’t recording the right shows. I’m not the only one displeased. Unfortunately, it sounds like they were federally mandated to change what they had before so there’s no going back.

I guess I should be thankful because I needed this. I have been relatively pleased with their service the last few months and considered just keeping Time Warner when I move to Lisa’s place. This is just one more reminder that their service sucks and will continue to do so and now is the time to try satellite. Then I read that Eric’s disapointed with his satellite provider. Yikes. Maybe they all blow.

“I Love The Oughts” Would Have Been A Better Name

June 24th, 2008 by Woody!

Beware, my terrible prophecy has come to pass. Of course, I was banking on the lack of patience by a company credited for destroying an entire generation’s attention span so it wasn’t that big of a streatch. VH1 is already saying I love the new millenium. Do not adjust your calendar, we still have a year and a half left in this decade and 990+ years left in this millenium. And yet, VH1 is going to this well. The former music channel successfully mined the 70s, 80s, and 90s but there’s not much left after multiple nostalgic visits.

Halfway through this decade, I wondered what was next. I saw this coming, but expected them to pull the trigger on this earlier. Does that mean I should give them credit for not being as impatient as I expected. Anybody seen it yet? I’ve got a few episodes waiting on my DVR so I can see this for myself. Or I can just remember them myself. I was there and it really wasn’t that long ago.

ESPNFL?

June 23rd, 2008 by Woody!

Seems like I missed a decent amount of news this weekend. Some good, some sad, some obvious. Like sports blogs are getting more mature. No, I mean as in grown-up. Or maybe it’s more like newspapers are becoming like blogs. I think it’s a little bit of both.

There’s the possibility that the NFL Network is coming to ESPN… in some way. We’ve heard for a while that the NFL has struggled to get their channel on cable. Maybe “struggle” is too kind of a term. I think they expected to big league themselves in by now. Didn’t happen. Honestly, I don’t watch ESPN Classic for much more than Cheap Seats reruns so I wouldn’t mind some of that other time being used by NFL Network programming.

And some very sad news: Farewell, George Carlin. You will be missed. Fortunately, you left behind some classic comedy. Share your favorite for a Sock Point.

Hangin’ With Ickey

June 22nd, 2008 by Woody!

I’m sure everybody (over the age of 20, at least) remembers Ickey Woods. The Bengals runningback tore up the NFL with 1,066 yards and 15 touchdowns in his rookie season and captivated America with his “Ickey Shuffle” touchdown dance. Unfortunately, he followed this early success with major injuries to both of his legs and his promising career was cut short. It wasn’t too long before the toast of the town was making a living selling meat door to door and forced to do his famous dance to close deals. Pretty sad story. Despite this, he still helped out with charities and even has his own youth foundation. I always had sympathy for the guy considering how far he fell so quickly. Heck, even the Ickey Shuffle means something more disgusting than it used to according to the Urban Dictionary.

Why am I bringing this up? Here’s me and the coach of the Cincinnati Sizzle following their huge National Women’s Football Association win last night. Well, it didn’t help them get to the playoffs but the Sizzle did win by about 36 points. The point is he was a huge NFL star and couldn’t capitalize on his short success. I heard he was bitter for a while and I do not blame him for a second. But he seems happier now, at peace with his life. As I watched him coach women playing football yesterday, I couldn’t help but feel glad seeing a big smile on his face and a genuine level of excitement despite having so much taken away from him.

Party Time. Excellent.

June 21st, 2008 by Woody!

I don’t watch the MTV Movie Awards anymore. Not a big deal but ditching the awards show means I missed the Wayne’s World reunion sketch that brought Mike Myers and Dana Carvey back into Campbell’s basement. I don’t think I’m ready for Wayne’s World 3 but this sketch was a nice thing to see.
